Assessment of ammonia toxicity in contaminated sediments in the upper Scheldt (Belgium): the development and application of toxicity identification evaluation procedures OMA
Van Sprang, P.; Janssen, C.R.; Sabayasachi, M.; Benijts, F.; Persoone, G..
The toxicity of sediment pore waters from 4 sites in the Upper Scheldt war characterized using modified Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) procedures The samples from all locations exhibited acute toxicity to the freshwater crustacean Thamnocephalus platyurus. The IIE approach was conducted using an enlarged battery of fractionation tests. Toxicity was removed or reduced significantly by the cation exchange resins and the air-stripping test at pH 11. Additionally, increased toxicity war observed at higher pH while a reduced toxicity war found at a decreased pH. From these TIE studies, ammonia war identified as the dominant toxic agent.

Cardio-respiratory development in bird embryos: new insights from a venerable animal model R. Bras. Zootec.
Burggren,Warren W.; Santin,Josele Flores; Antich,Maria Rojas.
ABSTRACT The avian embryo is a time-honored animal model for understanding vertebrate development. A key area of extensive study using bird embryos centers on developmental phenotypic plasticity of the cardio-respiratory system and how its normal development can be affected by abiotic factors such as temperature and oxygen availability. Through the investigation of the plasticity of development, we gain a better understanding of both the regulation of the developmental process and the embryo's capacity for self-repair. Additionally, experiments with abiotic and biotic stressors during development have helped delineate not just critical windows for avian cardio-respiratory development, but the general characteristics (e.g., timing and dose-dependence) of...

Chitin/toxicant interactions and microbial degradation within estuarine ecosystems. ArchiMer
Portier, R; Meyers, S.
The environmental effect and fate of several agricultural and industrial source toxicants were evaluated in controlled laboratory microcosm systems in the presence of the aminopolysaccharide polymer, chitin. Toxicants examined included methyl parathion, phenol, pentachlorophenol, 2,4 dichlorophenol, 1,2 dichloroethane and Kepone. Microcosm operating parameters, including pH/Eh, salinity, temperature, flow rate and sediment/water interface conditions, were based on comparable in situ measurements. Fate analysis predictions were based on mineralization of the parent toxicant compound as measured by chromatographic analysis or super(14)CO sub(2) expiration. Chitin, amended to continuous flow microcosms, promoted either cometabolic or cooxidative...

Dinoflagelles toxiques sur les cotes francaises pendant l'ete 1983. Extension du dinoflagelle Dinophysis acuminata en Bretagne sud et consequences pour les cultures marines. ArchiMer
Lassus, Patrick; Martin, A; Maggi, Pierre; Berthome, Jean-paul; Langlade, Aime; Bachere, Evelyne.
Discolored waters and human diseases by shellfishes were dominant features of summer 1983 in south coast of Brittany. Vilaine Bay, the most damaged area, was successively affected by brown waters in early June, and diarrhetic intoxications by harvested mussels (July and August), just as DPS producing dinoflagellate (D. acuminata ) reached higher water or mussel guts concentrations than years before. Outspreading in the whole south coast of Brittany and possible relation with hydrological or biological parameters are analyzed.
